Living Area
Using ceiling fans to circulate air will make you feel cooler and allow you to raise the temperature setting on your air conditioning thermostat by a few degrees.
Turn off everything that's not in use — lights, TVs, computers, electronics — to instantly save energy.
Purchase ENERGY STAR products when shopping for appliances, home office equipment and other products.
Clean or replace heating and AC system filters monthly. Dirty filters block air flow through these systems, increasing your energy bill and shortening the equipment’s life.
Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lights. This will save you almost $60 in electricity costs over the lifetime of each bulb and they'll last up to 10 times longer.
Activate "sleep" features on computers, copiers and other machines that power down when the equipment is on but not in use.
Laundry
Wash full loads - it's more efficient to wash a full load.
Choose a front loading washing machine.

Switch to cold water when you’re doing the laundry.
Kitchen
Defrost food naturally instead of using the microwave.
Avoid opening oven doors too often - each time you do the temperature drops by up to 15°C.

Set your freezer at -18°C and your fridge between 2°C and 5°C for greatest efficiency.
Leave space around the back of your fridge or freezer for air to circulate.
Avoid placing your fridge or freezer next to your oven or stove, or in direct sunlight.
